When Two Packrats Come Together

Some of you who read my other blog [end shameless plug] may know that Julian and I recently became homeowners. We are soon to be the owners of a little air space parcel in Vancouver West - not to be confused with West Vancouver, but very lovely nonetheless.

Real estate prices in Vancouver being what they are, this has meant a little downsizing for J and me. We are going from a two-bedroom-plus-den to a one-bedroom-plus-den in real estate speak. Not only are we sacrificing a room, but also much storage space. The summer is slipping away, so I figured we'd better get started on the culling process. Believe it or not, the picture below shows only part of our second Salvation Army run. And the first run consisted of four full Rubber Maid bins and numerous plastic bags.

Some of the more ridiculous items we have retained (until now) include:

-A worn pair of 15-year-old leather loafers (that haven't been worn in almost that long), lovingly referred to as "the boat shoes." (Julian's).
-A frayed pair of green bell-bottoms two sizes too large picked up ten years ago in Italy (mine).
-Julian's mesh "hip-hop" shirt.
-A black velveteen vampire cape (mine).
-Dollar store plastic flowers (that I BROUGHT from Ottawa).
-A purple windbreaker bought in 1990. (Julian's). (Ed. note: in fact it was bought in 1986. That's right, grade 6. It fit pretty big at the time.)
-A rusted penny tin (mine).

I have to say - it feels good to let go.

What, you're throwing out the baby gate!!? Oh, the memories, the memories ...

You're right, Tony, the mesh tank top doesn't take up much space. But it was ditched for two other reasons: no one wants to see the hairs on my triceps and the thing is a fire hazard.

I would like to request that you retain the mesh hip-hop shirt at least until I visit (only a couple of weeks), and furthermore, that I be allowed to photograph Julian in said shirt for posterity. How much space does it really take up? Come on!
